Philadelphia, New Jersey and Delaware community members and businesses will support fundraising efforts for pancreatic cancer research at the Carol Van Auken Night Out For a Cure, taking place at the Tap Room Bar and Grill from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014.
Now in its eighth year, Carol Ann Van Auken-DeAngelo organizes this event in memory of her mother, who passed away from pancreatic cancer just six months after diagnosis. In the United States, cancer of the pancreas is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women.
For seven years in a row, the Van Aukens have raised money for pancreatic cancer research through their annual golf outing. This year, the event’s organizers have decided to add a unique twist by switching it to an evening affair filled with food, fun and their always memorable silent auction.
“We absolutely love our annual golf outings but wanted to try something new,” said Van Auken-DeAngelo. “We’ll be alternating each year between the golf outing and Night Out For a Cure to keep things fresh and exciting!”
For 2014, auction donors include Disney World, Omni Hotels, Panera Bread, Caesars Atlantic City, Red Box, Wired 96.5, Philadelphia Chocolate Tours and more. In addition to the auction, a 50/50 raffle will take place to raise additional money for the cause.
“Last year we acquired auction donations prized at more than $30,000 due to the huge generosity of national and local businesses,” said Courtney Van Auken, event coordinator. “We’re overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and are thankful to everyone who makes this annual event a huge success.”
As an added bonus, this year’s event will include free rides (up to $20), from taxi-service smartphone app Uber Philly.
“We are so appreciative of Uber Philly’s donation, which has allowed us to offer a fun night with a safe ride home,” said Van Auken-DeAngelo. “The passion from our community to help others never ceases to amaze me, and I am honored by their support year after year.”
Proceeds from the Carol Van Auken Night Out For a Cure goes towards The Lustgarten Foundation, which donates 100 percent of their monies towards pancreatic cancer research.
“We are so grateful to the Van Auken family for their extraordinary efforts in raising awareness and funds in the fight against pancreatic cancer,” said Ann Walsh, director of events at The Lustgarten Foundation. “Their partnership with The Lustgarten Foundation brings us closer to early detection, better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for this dreadful disease.”
